Ange Postecoglou feels like he’s on a one man crusade, but he’s not alone.
After Tottenham’s well deserved win over Liverpool last night you might have expected for Big Ange to revel in the victory and shifty the focus to the second leg, however, refreshingly we saw the same drum being banged about the use of technology in football and how it is not improving the game. It’s baffling to us here to see what benefit VAR brings to football, and so our small team here are fully behind Ange’s assessment, he is not alone in fighting that fight.
Football has and will always be subjective no matter what tools you are using, the point is it will always be someone in charge of making a decision that someone else might disagree with, so there in itself is the major flaw. VAR has been active since the 19/20 season in the Premier League so it’s safe to say we have a big enough sample size now to judge it’s impact, and it’s fairly conclusive it has added no real benefit, if anything it is harming the game. The confusion it causes amongst fans within the stadium, the paying match going fans who should have the best experience are receiving the worst, even fans watching at home only have the benefits of replays to which again is a subjective decision.
Now let’s get to what is for us an even more important part, and that’s the entertainment aspect, football has long been around dating bac to the middle ages in the form of mob football, and developing through code to the late 1800’s, but that main factor was for it to be played as something fun, something to entertain. Any decision being made in modern football should always have the entertainment factor at the forefront of their decisions, VAR has not improved this, by the time taken to make decisions to the increased stoppages in games to disrupting the flow of the game. Just watch games that don’t have VAR and see how the flow of the game is so much better, no worry of celebrating a goal and waiting 5 minutes to find out it’s disallowed. Let the game be.
Change is not always better, people in charge of the game need to stop making changes for changes sake. Someone be brave and say this is not improving the game and let’s revert back, it’s never to late.
There are so many more things wrong with the state of VAR we could go on and on, but for now, we’ll just say; Big Ange we are fully behind you and want you to keep speaking, people will come Ange, people will most definitely come.
